Individuals often feel there is a stigma attached to finding pest infestations in their homes or workplaces. Bedbugs, rodents, or cockroaches are all very common in Scotland. On occasion people do not like to phone a pest control company due to embarrassment.
Let’s look at some frequently asked/mentioned pest control myths that lots of people believe to be true, that really are anything but!!
PEST CONTROL MYTHS, THE TRUTH
1.BEDBUGS ARE ONLY FOUNDS IN HOTES AND HOSTELS – NOT TRUE !
Bedbugs are well known and notorious hitchhikers, they can spread quickly given the correct circumstances, they will hide in your suitcase or holdall and arrive safe and well back at your property. They adapt to all locations, so they can be found in your home, as well as hotels, hostels, and other types of lodgings. Bedbugs prefer darkness, waste food, water, and moisture, and like nothing better than to set up in mattresses or surrounding furniture, and other crevices found in the bedroom. Their hiding places, however, they are not confined to bedrooms; they will be perfectly happy in family rooms.
Bedbugs will stay close to their food source which unfortunately is human beings, they find an opportune time to feed is whilst we sleep. Pricking the skin and feeding on human blood, the bedbug’s saliva acts as an anaesthetic and for this reason we don’t wake up when they are feed. This can cause no end of emotional stress, but also the irritation, or potential infection from scratching the bites. Bedbugs are notoriously difficult to get remove and professional treatment by Pest-Master is recommended to ensure the problem is eradicated.
2.INSECT AND RODENT PESTS ARE ONLY FOUND IN UNCLEAN HOMES – NOT TRUE !
Rodents, bed bugs, ants, cockroaches and other insects are not only found in poorly kept or dirty properties, but this is also an urban myth. Rodents and insect pests can infest even spotlessly clean properties, any insects or rodents are looking for three basic things to survive and breed-shelter, food and most importantly a water source, so no matter how clean your home is, this will not deter infestation.
3.PLACING CHEESE ON A RAT/MOUSE TRAP IS CORRECT –SORRY WRONG AGAIN !
Rodents do not prefer cheese, lets save that for the cartoons! Rodents are omnivorous, they do however favour seeds, pulses, nuts, bird feed and sweet sugary items such as peanut butter and are much more effective using on traps. Pest-Master staff reckon peanut butter /bacon is the best way to trap rodents!
4.MY CAT/DOG WILL KEEP MY PROPERTY FREE OF MICE AND RATS - NOT TRUE !
Felines are more likely to play with a mouse in the house rather than kill it. Cats are independent and will do as they please. A well fed cat probably wont want to eat a mouse. Small terrier breeds are more likely to see off a rodent and will also highligh any infstation in your property or garden area.
5.FLEAS DIE WITHOUT A HOST – NOT EXACTLY TRUE !
Only if they don’t find a host.
Fleas can survive between 3-5 days without a feed, this normally offers them an opportunity to find a new host.
The most prevalent flea we encounter in our homes and places of work are cat fleas, followed quickly by the dog flea. Normally associated with our pets, they can however be carried by rodents, squirrels, foxes and rabbits, fleas elongated legs allow them to jump quickly and simply from your animals to infest other areas of your property soft furnishings.
They are parasites and whilst their bites are painless they do result in discomfort from nasty itchiness or rash.
