You know it’s the run up to Christmas when hit reality tv show ‘I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here’ returns to our screens. Love it or loathe it, it is the annual television event watched by millions of viewers. Where a group of so-called famous people fly to a jungle in New South Wales, Australia, go through a series of trials, conquer their fears and feast on some disgusting critters, in the attempt to be named king or queen of the jungle.

The survival game sees contestants living in a custom-built camp without the comforts of home. They sleep in hammocks, often lay on rocks or on the ground and use an outhouse called a dunny. Celebrities may shower in a waterfall and live on a diet of rice and beans. Unless they win, what is called, a Bushtucker Trial, where they must munch on creepy crawlies or consume stomach-churning food and drink, usually diced up insects or parts of an animal’s body, to win a challenge for the camp. The contestants invariably eat or drink crickets, green ants, cockroaches, roasted spiders or tarantulas, raw fish eyes, beach worms or mealworms, to name but a few of the creatures on the menu.

This is not the show to go on if you happen to be squeamish or an insectophobe. In the programs 18-year history, since its launch back in 2002, it has seen celebrities like Katie Price, Gino D’Acampo, Stacey Solomon, Christopher Biggins and scores of others take on the trials, in the hope of converting a star for a meal for the camp. Allowing them to dine on local tucker, such as Crocodile, Kangaroo and Emu meat, alongside other local delicacies.

Fans of ‘I’m A Celebrity’ may enjoy watching celebrities eating bugs and critters or crawling through rats on television, but it is a different ballgame when facing a real-life infestation in your home.
